Chapter 14

Blake was right—an extra night outside of Denver was just what I needed. It still wasn’t the most restful sleep I’d ever had, but I felt a lot better the next morning.

It helped that the call-out video had decidedly blown up in Cherry Sunrise’s face. A number of other people—mostly small business owners in New Mexico—had posted their own videos stating they’d had problems with her as well. More than a few had echoed Bob’s story about her badgering and threatening them, and like him, they had screencaps and even a few recorded voicemails to back corroborate their stories.

Last night, an incredibly successful cosmetics influencer had worked with her briefly posted a video, and she very diplomatically expanded on the “creative differences” that had led them to part ways several months earlier. Quite a few influencers joined in, essentially apologizing on behalf of all of us for the behavior of one clearly toxic individual. Influencers were often guilty by association of our loudest and least respectful members, and the collective message from dozens was that what she’d done to both Blake and to me were unacceptable.

This morning, Cherry Sunrise’s YouTube channel was gone, and the only post on her Instagram was a snotty goodbye because all the “haters” had ganged up on her in defense of my abusive, misogynistic ass.

Whatever. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

The whole debacle had been over and done with in what felt like a nanosecond, and the relief was mind-blowing. I’d weathered this. My channel—my livelihood—was intact.

And somehow, the man who’d stepped up and defended me was still here, carrying my leashed kitten from the trailer into the truck so he could put him in his carrier. He wouldn’t be with me for long, but my God, I was grateful he’d decided to stick around for a few more days.

Once the pets were situated, we buckled ourselves in to head for Aspen, a drive that was almost indulgently brief, given some of my marathon travel days. We settled into an RV park at a little after noon, walked the dog, drove into town to look around and get lunch, and then came back to the trailer to relax for the evening.

Well…“relax.” We both had some work to catch up on. That actually was more relaxing than most people would’ve guessed. I had a lot of admin to take care of, and crossing those things off my list always gave me a sense of accomplishment and dialed back my anxiety.

Because I couldn’t argue with Blake—this was some legit anxiety. Something that was always simmering in the background like a dripping faucet in the next room or an electronic that constantly gave off a high-pitched whine. Just enough to keep my teeth on edge.

At some point, I would look into therapists who did televisits like he’d suggested. For now, I’d focus on decompressing after this bullshit with the other influencer, and then getting Blake back to Chicago.

The video debacle was, thank God, dying down.
